Health in body and brain depends in large part on nutrition for there is a strong relationship between diet and disease. At the Brain Training Institute we do not encourage the use of Neurofeedback to suppress symptoms of nutritional imbalance. Instead people may be referred for nutritional advice and encouraged to consider changes in eating and drinking habits.
Many Health disorders are developed and maintained through the food and drinks that are consumed. Parents will be familiar with the impact of different foods, additives, and artificial sweeteners on their children. Consequently it will not be a surprise to learn that nutrition has a significant effect on the brain. The brain eeg mirrors almost everything; chemical activity and physiologic activity. A lack of vitamins and minerals will compound a wide range of disorders. Scientific findings show for example a lack of various minerals such as Mg, Zn, Fe, Sulphate, Vitamins like B6 and or increased lead, in ADHD children and adults. This can be made worse by picky eating, lots of sugar and low protein food. Supplementing these deficiencies can lead to obvious symptom relief. Likewise a widespread deficiency in vitamin D has been reported in the New Zealand population. This deficiency is a causal factor in 17 varieties of cancer and is implicated in impaired brain function. Symptoms of vitamin D deficiency include anxiety, depression, fatigue, insomnia, physical weakness and carbohydrate craving. The sun is the best source of vitamin D.
Because of the importance of nutrition, neurofeedback clients at the Brain Training Institute will be invited to review how they are feeding their brain.
